Technology

Technology is ubiquitous, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities and our homes. As an educator, I believe integrating technology into the classroom is imperative for students to acquire the skills they need to be successful in a complex, highly technological knowledge based economy. I also feel that technology is extremely important in supporting many components in education: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts. Technology offers educators effective ways to reach different types of learners, as well as the ability to assess students understanding through multiple means.

Personally, I have a huge interest in incorporating technology in my classroom, however possible. Whether it be through the use of smartboards, response systems, projectors, document cameras, IPads, I have seen how well students identify, learn and become engaged with hands on technological based learning. My personal knowledge of technology is constantly expanding and evolving. I can only hope to have the opportunity to share that with my future students.

IPad/Smartboard activities and apps I have used, recommend and love:

  • Reading Ravens (Literacy) - self paced lessons, customized reading, vocabulary exercises
  • Native Numbers (Math) - individualized learning with carefully sequenced activities customized to each students by the teacher
  • Dragon (Literacy) - voice records student's writing and allows editing; helps develop fine motor skills
  • Story Kit (Literacy) - students create their own story book using text and images
  • ShowMe (Literacy, Drama etc)  - turns your IPad into an Interactive white board and records voice overs
  • Math Board (Math) - simple math drills that generates quizzes from incorrect answers
  • Pages (Literacy) - a simple and easy word processor that can sync to a computer
  • Garage Band (Music, Literacy, Drama) - turns your IPad into a collection of touch instruments and allows recording capabilities
