Highgate Public School (current volunteer)
One of the greatest things I have learned about here was York's program called the Daily Five (I am sure this is will be evident as I continue to build this blog). Since I started volunteering in York Region, I have been part of the Daily Five program and have built and expanded my knowledge on its programs expectations. I have also been deeply involved in many reading circles, readers theatre and drama activities that encourage and motivate learning opportunities. Here, I have also had the opportunity to learn more about and use diagnostic, formative and summative assessment as learning. I am more confident in giving feedback, helping students recognize and share their goals, forming next steps for learning and involving students in their learning. Highgate is unique in the sense that they are a technology school. Technology is used, and expected to be used, in the classroom on a daily basis in all subject areas. With my strong background in technology and its relevance in the classroom, I have been able to suggest many different uses of technology for teachers to use during lessons; many of which are in my resources on this blog. I love volunteering here because not only do I learn more about what technology is avilable to teachers in the classroom, I can also share my existing knowledge with them in order to expand student learning.
William G. Davis Public School (current volunteer)
For the past two years, I have been volunteering at William
G Davis a small public school in Toronto. At W.G Davis, I volunteer mainly in
their morning literacy block leading guided reading groups, independent
structured reading conferences and shared reading/writing activities. I have
also had the opportunity to model new comprehension strategies and skills to
the students through lessons I have created.
Saint Brendan’s Catholic School (current volunteer)
My presence at St. Brendan’s I feel is a strong one, as I once was a student there and many of my past teachers are currently still teaching. One of the teacher’s who inspired me to take this path is still there and I have been blessed to have the opportunity to work with her again, but this time as a teacher! At Saint Brendan’s I have been very involved with their Art’s program. While doing my placement there I started a Glee club and was deeply involved in their school musical Annie; one I have performed in myself on a few occasions. Currently as a volunteer, I have been creating, implementing and assessing various original units in both Dance and Drama for Grade 3 and 4 students.
The Hill Academy (LTO)
I was employed at the Hill Academy for one full year covering a leave of absence. While here, I held a unique position and was able to work with students from Grade 7 to post graduates. I implemented the use of the smartboard in all of my classes, and went paperless in my post graduate writer's craft class, one of my proudest moments as an educator. Working at The Hill Academy, I was able to implement my knowledge of how to adapt my lessons for many different types of learners; and in addition those who have very demanding athletic schedules.
Teacher's College (Practicum Placements)
During Teacher's College I did my practice teaching at three different schools. Working in each of these schools allowed me to learn from some of the greatest teachers as well as expand my knowledge and confidence in my dream profession. I had the opportunity to create, plan and implement my own unique lesson plans in all subject courses. I was also successful at starting nutrition clubs at all three schools as well as a "Glee" club at another. I gained an extensive amount of knowledge with Smartboard technology and how to integrate it into my lesson plans.
